Extra Notes

One pro-wrestling illustration series that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time is Goro Shigeno vs. Ken Mayumura. I’ve really enjoyed the tense baseball rivalry that these two had in MAJOR, so I really wanted to depict it in a pro-wrestling setting. And though that series has not really materialized yet, consider this as a little teaser.

This isn’t the first time I’ve drawn Goro and Mayumura wrestling each other. In the previous piece I made, Mayumura was dominating Goro with a crossface (which I referred to as the Nagata Lock II). As such, I decided to let Goro get his revenge here by locking Mayumura up with the STF.

I opted with the STF for this piece mainly because it’s set in my mind that this would be one of Goro’s finishing moves. After all, I did conceptualize Goro as a John Cena-like character in the alternate universe. I also wanted to improve from my previous attempts to draw the STF, so I hope this one looked much better than the other attempts.

I’m not sure if the Goro vs. Mayumura pro-wrestling series would ever materialize. But I’m still hoping it will, and that I would be able to give out my very best in every piece.

I hope you enjoy this piece.

Extra Notes:
When I started the whole concept of Pro-Wrestling MAJOR, I’ve set in my mind that there would be three major players in it: Goro Shigeno, Toshiya Sato, and Ken Mayumura. Since then, I’ve drawn Goro and Toshi numerous times, especially when I drew them in a match against each other. However, I haven’t been able to draw Mayumura that much. With this piece, I’m hoping to rectify that.

In my previous works, I’ve drawn Mayumura in long tights inspired by the wrestling gear of Jun Akiyama. This time, I decided to don some trunks, with the color scheme inspired by both Akiyama’s gear and Mayumura’s uniform in his Kaido baseball team (in the MAJOR manga series).

Mayumura is one guy whom I’ve really wanted to draw as a wrestler for a long time already. He has that stern, no-nonsense look that you often get to see among many old-school Japanese pro-wrestlers. This is part of the reason why I once compared him to Akiyama and his “Sternness” gimmick.

I am really hoping to draw Mayumura in a match in the near future. In particular, I really hope to draw him vs. Goro in a wrestling illustration series similar to Goro vs. Toshi. Hopefully, there would be a good amount of interest for me to be motivated to pursue it.

Last thing to point out: normally, I release these types of fan art during the character’s birthday. But since Mayumura’s birthday is still a bit far away, I decided to go ahead and release. In the next few weeks, you might also realize what else I had in store.

Anyway, I hope you’ll enjoy this piece.

Extra Notes:

For me, the anime/manga series MAJOR will always have three “kings”. They’re the three guys who define what MAJOR is all about. Goro Shigeno and Toshiya Sato are two of those guys. The other one is Ken Mayumura. So today, I pay tribute to him on his birthday (December 25).

For this piece, I opted to dress Mayumura up as Jun Akiyama. Since Pro-Wrestling MAJOR is based on Pro-Wrestling NOAH, it is admittedly odd to use a wrestler who is now identified as the President of AJPW (a rival promotion of NOAH). But I’ve really believed that Mayumura shares several similarities with Akiyama, which makes this crossover so perfect.

As mentioned before, Mayumura is often seen with a very stern look, just like “Sternness” Jun Akiyama. Apart from that, Mayumura is a very impressive athlete even at a young age, to the point that pro-baseball teams quickly sought him after his high school graduation. It’s just like how Akiyama impressed people in his debut match at AJPW, and eventually became a big star in AJPW and NOAH. Those comparisons showed that just like Akiyama, Mayumura can also be called as a “Supernova”.

Mayumura comes across as one of those silent yet deadly characters that you often see in a lot of anime shows. Goro himself once said that it’s like he isn’t human whenever he’s on the baseball field. And yet, towards the end of the first MAJOR series, he actually becomes sympathetic as a son with a very close relationship to his mother. If Mayumura had been a character in a more popular show, he would probably have the same level of popularity as the likes of Shikamaru or Kiba from Naruto.

Although this tribute puts Mayumura in a pro-wrestling AU, I hope this could at least help give him more attention to potential fans in the future.

Extra Notes:
This is my third submission for Pro-Wrestling MAJOR, which is my crossover AU between the anime/manga series MAJOR and the Japanese pro-wrestling promotion Pro-Wrestling NOAH. This will likely be my last piece for the crossover before I work on the next Manga Pro-Wrestling issue, featuring this crossover.

For this piece, I used the Sleeper Hold submission move. This decision sprung up after realizing that Kenta Kobashi doesn’t really have a signature submission hold. This was a bit problematic, since I gave Toshiya Sato a gimmick that somewhat reflects that of Kobashi. However, I settled on the Sleeper Hold because Kobashi tends to use this submission hold in many cases, and he even has a really wicked suplex that uses the sleeper as a transition hold.

I decided to modify my style in drawing the details here, particularly in how the torso should be drawn. It’s challenging, since I’ve been doing wrestling illustrations for a year already, and I start to notice some lapses in my drawing style. But hopefully, I could continue to improve on my skill slowly but surely.

Once again, I would like to hear your feedback on which match you’d like to see in the next Manga Pro-Wrestling issue. With the release of MAJOR 2nd and the emergence of the NOAH-Suzukigun feud, it feels like a great time to really make the most out of Pro-Wrestling MAJOR. That’s why I decided to use it in the next issue. So, I’d like to know which match you’d prefer. Would it be Shigeno vs. Sato? Shigeno vs. Mayumura? Or Sato vs. Mayumura?

For the MAJOR fans, I do hope to hear more from you. I’m glad that I’m seeing more feedback from the MAJOR fans, and I do hope to hear more from you. Though I appreciate everyone’s constructive feedback, it’s feedback from this specific fanbase that I consider to be the most reliable. So, any form of constructive criticism would really mean a lot.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece.

Extra Notes:
This is my second submission for Pro-Wrestling MAJOR, which is my crossover AU between MAJOR and Pro-Wrestling NOAH.

For this piece, I used the Nagata Lock II submission move. Non-puroresu fans may also know this as the Crossface. I decided to use this move since it’s one of the submission holds that Jun Akiyama has used a lot in his career, and I’m giving Mayumura a pseudo-Akiyama gimmick due to his serious demeanor.

Drawing Goro’s right arm in this piece was very tricky. This was due to the reference image that I was using. Hopefully, it looks decent. I am open to hearing feedback on how I could improve this.

At this point, I’d like to have your feedback as to whether you’d like to see more of this particular feud. In the original Pixiv poll, the interest was mainly on Shigeno vs. Sato, but then Shigeno vs. Mayumura suddenly sprung up last week. On the other hand, it was just a handful of votes, so it wasn’t representative of MAJOR or puroresu fans in general. As such, I want to know if you’d like to see one of these feuds in the next Manga Pro-Wrestling issues. If not, I still have another feud in mind for the next issue.

I’m still hoping for input from the MAJOR fans in general. Though I really appreciate the support that wrestling fans have given to my last piece, I really want to hear more feedback from the MAJOR fanbase. It’s more or less a deciding factor on what the next step will be for the next MangaPuro issue.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece.

Extra Notes:

In honor of the upcoming return of the manga series “MAJOR” this March, I’ve decided to come up with a King of Manga Pro-Wrestling tribute to the long-running baseball comic series. This has been revised from the original version so that it would have the standard size of a trading card.

I know it’s odd that I’m doing a pro-wrestling fan art for a baseball series. But hey, Japan has a long-running pro-wrestling magazine called “Baseball Magazine”. At least this crossover fan art isn’t too far off.

To start things off, I decided to draw Ken Mayumura as Jun Akiyama. I decided to dress him as Akiyama mainly since the latter is known for his sternness. Hence, he became known as “Sternness”. If you’ve seen Mayumura throughout the series, you would notice that he also has a stern face. Heck, his face looks so ruthless that it just says, “I mean business!” and “Prepare to get hurt!”, just like Akiyama.

Of course, that doesn’t that Mayumura has no soft side, as evidenced by the MAJOR World Series OVA. Akiyama has also showed a soft and funny side through the years as well, but don’t think for a second that he still can’t kick your butt.

There’s also another reason why I chose a Mayumura-Akiyama crossover. You see, long before Akiyama became the current President of All Japan Pro-Wrestling (AJPW), he was one of the top guys in Mitsuharu Misawa’s promotion Pro Wrestling NOAH, along with Kobashi and Misawa himself. Mayumura, for his part, can be considered as one of the top baseball player characters in MAJOR, along with Goro Shigeno and Toshiya Sato.

Personally, I really wanted to expand this further into a Pro Wrestling NOAH and MAJOR crossover. But since Akiyama is currently the president of AJPW, not to mention the supposed bad relationship that AJPW has with NOAH at the present, I think it would be best if the crossover isn’t too prevalent here.

I hope you’ll enjoy this piece.
