Jean Kirstein (Time Skip Version)

【進撃のプロレス】 ジャン・キルシュタイン (タイムスキップバージョン)
ATTACK ON PRO-WRESTLING: JEAN KIRSTEIN (TIME SKIP VERSION)

漫画: 進撃の巨人
Manga/Anime: Attack on Titan

Extra Notes:

Attack on Titan has played a key role in the development of my pro-wrestling art. Without that Eren vs. Jean pro-wrestling art that I released way back in 2014, I wouldn’t have had the motivation to produce Manga Pro-Wrestling. And since Attack on Titan is going to release its final season this year, I thought it’s about time I give a final nod to the series that helped inspire me to draw pro-wrestling art. For today, I’m presenting a piece I’ve been wanting to release for a long time already: the new Jean Kirstein.

As some AOT viewers may know, Jean has had a huge makeover ever since the time skip in the series. I thought his new look was reminiscent of how many famous wrestlers develop from being clean-cut rookies to long-haired veterans in the ring. That’s why I wanted to portray Jean here in a manner similar to that.

For his attire, I opted to just base it on his new attire in the series. After all, doing so with his previous gear did leave a mark for some people.

I also chose to add a younger version of him in this piece to remind people of how he used to look him, especially since this was the version I drew of him in the past few years.

I hope to do a few more nods to the series before it finally ends. I hope you enjoy this piece.

Additional Notes:

It’s that time of the year again. It’s November 5, which means it’s the fictional birthday of Goro Shigeno, the main character of the baseball anime/manga series MAJOR. And thus I continue my personal tradition that started since 2014.

For this piece, I decided to go for a baseball theme. One main reason for this is that the past couple of years saw the rise to baseball superstardom of Japanese baseball player Shohei Ohtani, who has been frequently compared to the original Goro Shigeno. As such, I also wanted my piece to be a nod to the man often called as the real-life Goro.

As part of my nod to Ohtani, I decided to use colors often associated with his current Major League Baseball (MLB) team, the Los Angeles Angels. As such, I put aside the green and white that I often used for Goro, and brought in red, white, navy blue, and grey. The nickname I used for Goro in this piece is “Go Time”, which is a nod to Ohtani’s nickname “Shotime”.

The baseball theme was also inspired by the planned (but eventually cancelled) pro-wrestling event of New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) in Yokohama Stadium, which seems to be the place where the Yokohama Ocean Stadium in MAJOR was based on. I conceptualized Goro being in a wrestling match in the middle of the Yokohama Stadium, thus the background. If ever I get enough time and energy for it, I may expand this further into drawing the match itself.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece. Happy birthday, Goro!

Pro-Wrestlers for Leni & Pro-Wrestling Fans for Leni

PRO-WRESTLERS FOR LENI & PRO-WRESTLING FANS FOR LENI

In 2022, it’s time for a Pink Attack. It’s time to vote for the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be.

In 2022, it’s time for The Man to come around. And in 2022, The Man is Leni Robredo. It’s time for Leni Robredo to become the next President of the Philippines.

In 2022, it’s time to be radical by spreading love in a world filled with corruption and misinformation.

And that’s the bottomline because the Kakampinks said so.

Extra Notes:

This was an idea that came to my mind recently in the past few days in response to the various groups that were sprouting out on social media in support of the 2022 presidential bid of Vice-President Leni Robredo.

I know that beneath their love for pro-wrestling, many pro-wrestlers and pro-wrestling fans want a change from the incumbent government. Pro-wrestlers, in particular, have not been able to hold shows since February 2020.

The image itself is derived from the various pro-Leni group images that were circulating on Twitter. As such, I don’t claim full ownership of this picture.

In making this image, I never really thought about actually organizing the group itself since I can’t do that at the moment. My aim at this point is really to just to inspire the the pro-wrestling community in the Philippines to show their support for VP Leni Robredo. If this does lead to someone else organizing a group, especially among the pro-wrestlers, that would be awesome.

And as mentioned, I intended this to be noticed by the pro-wrestling community in the Philippines. I didn’t expect someone like the historian and former Cabinet undersecretary Manolo Quezon to notice my art. So that’s a bonus for me, and for the pro-wrestling community in general.

Wolf Face (Takaharu Ogami)

【帝都プロレス】ウルフェイス (大神敬晴
TEITO PRO-WRESTLING: WOLF FACE (TAKAHARU OGAMI)

漫画: 名探偵コナン
Manga/Anime: Detective Conan

Extra Notes:

One obscure character that has always interested me is Takaharu Ogami, the pro-wrestler in Detective Conan who also goes by his masked wrestler persona Wolf Face. Sure, he isn’t a significant character in the long-running series, but it still thrills me that my favorite anime series had a pro-wrestler character and a couple of pro-wrestling episodes. I’ve drawn Ogami back in 2016, but I thought it’s about time I drew him again.

This time around, I decided to draw him both as Wolf Face and as his unmasked persona. After all, that particular episode was focused on the Wolf Face character, so I might as well draw that pro-wrestling persona instead.

I also decided to highlight the fictional pro-wrestling promotion he was under: Teito Pro-Wrestling. (The word 帝都 roughly translates to “imperial capital”, but the anime series used the name “Teito” instead.)

I’m hoping I could at least draw Wolf Face and/or Takaharu Ogami in a wrestling match in the future, as well as make a series of fan art centered around Teito Pro-Wrestling. As much as it thrilled me to see a pro-wrestling themed episode in Detective Conan, it’s a bit frustrating that they never actually let Wolf Face/Ogami wrestle.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece.

ハッピーバースデー、デク! (7月15日)
Happy birthday, Deku!

I hope you will like it. I would appreciate your feedback for this drawing.

Extra Notes:

July 15 is the fictional birthday of My Hero Academia protagonist Izuku Midoriya, or more fondly known as Deku. As such, I thought it would be the perfect day to finally release a piece I first conceptualized since February: Deku Cena!

To recall, some MHA fans noted back in February how Deku looked like he was doing the “You Can’t See Me” gesture of WWE legend John Cena in the movie poster of the anime. Cena apparently noted this fan observation and turned heads amongst the MHA and the general pro-wrestling and anime community when he acknowledged this on his Instagram account. Interestingly, though, hardly anybody really took this opportunity to turn Deku into John Cena. And that’s where I step in! 😁

This isn’t the first time I drew an anime character as John Cena. Way back in 2016, I drew Attack on Titan character Jean Kirstein as John Cena, mainly because of the Jean/John connection. Back then, I was trying to capitalize on the peak of the “His Name is John Cena!” meme.

For Deku Cena, though, I opted to go for a piece that resembles a John Cena t-shirt design. As such, I used the “NEVER GIVE UP” catchphrase of Cena as the background (similar to a few of the official Cena t-shirt designs). Anyway, I think the catchphrase fits Deku perfectly since he has that “never give up” attitude anyway and pushes himself to be good in what he does.

The colors were made to resemble the colors of the U.A. High School in the series. And instead of Cena’s hand sign on his wrist bands, I opted to draw a typical hand gesture of Deku. I decided to keep the “You Can’t See Me” sign on his other wrist bands, though, simply because I can’t think of any better alternative.

I hope you enjoy this piece.

Extra Notes:

Last year, I tried to start a sideline Gumroad business, with the hopes of selling digital art featuring pro-wrestling moves. I launched that project by selling an illustration featuring two pro-wrestlers and one of them using the camel clutch.

However, the response went way below my expectations, and I shelved that project of mine. However, I felt that it would be a shame if that drawing never saw the light of day. As such, I’ve decided  to post the drawing here for everyone to view for free.

In conceiving this piece, I decided to experiment in several ways, mainly in designing the characters. I did base them off certain people (whose identities I will not reveal), but I also wanted to try and check how I can make it look better if I was not limited to how those people looked in real life.

The desire to experiment is also why I opted for an outdoor event setting. I wanted to go beyond what I have been accustomed to doing.

Although the Gumroad project is pretty much a dud at this point, I still hope I can relaunch it in the future.

I hope you enjoyed this piece.
