Extra Notes:

This was a promise that took a while to be fulfilled. And I wanted to make sure that I fulfill it before this year ends.

Back on October 12, 2019, PWR held a special pro-wrestling show called “PWR Homecoming”. It was PWR’s most ambitious show to date. On that day, I released my final version of my fan art for PWR wrestler Quatro. On the same day, I also tweeted that I would make a fan art for PWR wrestler Chino Guinto if he won his PHX Championship match in the event. Eventually, he did end up winning his match, and so the fan art was now gonna happen.

However, the year 2020 proved to be a very challenging year for everyone in the world due to the global pandemic. And in the middle of the year, we would find out that it was also going to be a very difficult and painful year for the pro-wrestling industry for reasons besides the pandemic itself. Still, I want to help support the people in the Philippine pro-wrestling industry in this tough time. This is my little way of showing that support.

In making this piece, I opted to give Chino the PHX championship. Though it’s true that he did lose the belt, I made that abovementioned promise with the intention of letting him have the belt in the drawing. After all, he is one of the more charismatic and prominent holders of the PHX Championship. The background is a nod to his The Network, his pyramid scheme-inspired stable that remains one of the most creative stables I’ve ever encountered in pro-wrestling. I also opted for two versions of the piece: one with his trademark white shades, and the other without it.

Now I know times are tough, and there are still tensions and anxiety over the events of the past few months. But I’m hoping things will be settled in the end. All I can hope for this holiday season is love and peace for everyone.

I hope you enjoyed this piece.

Extra Notes:

One of the more exciting stables in Philippine Wrestling Revolution at the moment is MSG. From its small beginning with the manager Mr. Sy courting wrestlers with his guarantee for fame, the stable has grown in such a way that all three of the PWR wrestlers in it are reigning champions in the promotion. (The fourth wrestler member, Carlos Zamora, is an international wrestler who makes occasional appearances to the promotion.)

For this art, I opted to draw the four original members of the stable in the style of the art from The Beatles album Let it Be. This idea sprung out partly after learning that they have produced a t-shirt inspired by Abbey Road.

I also like how the Let it Be parody provides a little bit of symbolism. Mr. Sy, the manager of the group, is separated from the rest with a red background. SANDATA and Main Maxx are drawn on the same column to imply that they are a tag team. SANDATA and Mr. Sy both have a microphone, partly because Mr. Sy is the spokesman of the stable, and partly because they have a weekly speaking engagement involving pro-wrestling. And Chris Panzer…well, it’s mostly because I wanted to flaunt his hair in the same way the Let it Be album flaunted George Harrison’s hair.

The art took months to finish since I had other stuff to deal. Nevertheless, I’m glad that I’m finally able to finish this piece. I hope you guys enjoy it.

Extra Notes:

As a freelance wrestler, fighter, and trainer, Carlos Zamora seriously kicks ass. And as “El Guapo”, he’s got the body and the looks to back it up. Having said that, imagine my surprise when one day he contacted me about possibly doing a t-shirt design for him. That begins the story of this piece.

I first knew about Carlos Zamora back when he wrestled for a PWR show back in early 2019. He is based in Denmark, but he has some Filipino blood with him. Later on, I checked him out even further, and was left impressed by his athleticism. (And admittedly, the fact that “El Guapo”, as he calls himself, is really el guapo. Hahaha. 😀 )

Not long after, a surprise popped in my Instagram. El Guapo messaged me, little ol’ El Ordinario. 😀 He said he was coming back to the Philippines earlier this year and he asked if I can do a design for his homecoming. It was a surprise, since I never did something like that before. Since I was curious on how it would turn out, I decided to go for it.

The design for this piece is largely based on one of his studio poses as the reigning Dansk Pro Wrestling (DPW) Heavyweight Champion. A few modifications were made to reflect his current ring gear and the necklaces he often wears in his entrance. The diamond shape represents the pro-wrestling ring, but this was really just added as my way of making the design fit for a t-shirt.

The t-shirt eventually did materialize. It was featured and sold in his comeback show in the Philippines, PWR Mabuhay ang Wrestling, which was held last January 2020. Sadly, I couldn’t go to the show due to distance. However, I got to see Carlos Zamora and other guys wearing the shirt via Instagram.

It was amazing to see. The t-shirt really had my design. Just….wow.

And for what it’s worth, Carlos Zamora once again kicked ass in that show. Many even called his match with Mike Madrigal as the match of the night.

Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed the design, El Guapo. And I hope you guys enjoyed this piece.

Extra Notes:

It’s a good day for a swell battle.

Today is PWR Homecoming, arguably the most historic event in Philippine pro-wrestling. Today, top international pro-wrestlers with Filipino heritage will join homegrown Filipino talents in the ring, in what is possibly a once-in-a-lifetime event. Unfortunately for me, I couldn’t go to the event due to various reasons, but I hope to do my share in commemorating and promoting the event. As such, I decided to bring out a fan art for the reigning Kampeon ng Pilipinas, Quatro.

Back in May, I made a vow that I would draw Quatro if he ever became PWR Champion. True enough, he won the championship. And with his athleticism and his charisma, he deserves to be the Kampeon ng Pilipinas.

I originally sketched the piece last month, as a way of boosting his confidence up for a previous show. That’s why I thought it’d be fitting to release the final version today, on what is currently the biggest event ever in Philippine pro-wrestling.

Since he is known as The Light Bringer, I opted for a background that somehow showed light coming out from the darkness. Admittedly, I’m very pleased with the effect made in this piece.

The championship is arguably the most complex belt I’ve had to draw. It doesn’t bother that much, though, because the current design of the PWR Championship is also one of the most beautiful pro-wrestling championship belt designs I’ve ever seen. My drawing may not be accurate, but I hope it captured the look as a whole.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this piece, Quatro. Best wishes to you and to everyone in PWR Homecoming.

At this point, I’d like to add a more personal note. While making this piece, my grandfather suddenly passed away. I am in the grieving process at the time of writing. But I’m glad that while making this piece, there was a Bible verse that stood out and gave me some reflection on life:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)

Extra Notes:

Back in 2014, a friend of mine referred me to a Facebook group that aimed to establish a pro-wrestling promotion in the Philippines. This group would soon end up establishing Philippine Wrestling Revolution (PWR).

One of the stars in the newly established promotion was Jake de Leon, or JDL for short. He played a haciendero (farm owner) character who called his opponents alipin (slave) and had a tagline of “Minimum Wage, Maximum Rage”. Eventually, he took more inspiration from his Visayan roots (particularly his Ilonggo heritage) by proclaiming his love for the grilled chicken dish Inasal, and even called his signature move the Inasal Lock. For a roster that was heavily influenced by Western gimmicks, his Filipino-inspired gimmick was a real breath of fresh air.

At first, I was highly skeptical with the promotion, so I ended up leaving the group. But I still checked their promotion out from time to time. Over the years, I’ve seen the promotion struggle and be on the verge of closure. But they’ve managed to turn it around and make the pro-wrestling scene vibrant in the Philippines.

JDL was a key part of that success. It can be said that he has become an ambassador for the promotion. He’s even managed to start making a name for himself in the pro-wrestling scene in Southeast Asia, while representing PWR.For the great efforts that he has done for Philippine pro-wrestling, he has earned my respect.

Now today, at their event called Wrevolution X, JDL has put his PWR career on the line in what can be described as a grudge match. I’ve had some thoughts on what could possibly happen in that match, so I decided that it would be the right time to pay tribute to the man who dubs himself as Mr. Philippine Wrestling.

I hope you enjoyed this piece, amigo. Whatever happens, I wish all the best.
