Extra Notes

September 10 was dubbed among Japanese fans of Detective Conan as Kudo Day. I had planned on joining in on the celebration by submitting a new wrestling artwork featuring Shinichi. Though the day has already passed this year, I decided to press on with the artwork.

I opted to draw Shinichi performing a German Suplex as a form of shout-out to Konosuke Takeshita, a top pro-wrestler for the Japanese wrestling promotion DDT Pro-Wrestling, as well as a self-confessed Detective Conan fan. Similarly, I also based the tights of Shinichi on Takeshita’s own tights.

Because I based Shinichi’s pro-wrestling persona here on Takeshita, I also chose to design the background to make it similar in appearance to a typical house show in DDT Pro-Wrestling.

Shinichi’s opponent in this piece was intended to be Heiji Hattori, a popular character in the Detective Conan series. Since his looks aren’t too obvious here, I chose not to highlight it too much.

I hope you enjoy this piece.

Extra Notes

Once again, it’s September 10, the day Detective Conan fans consider as “Kudo Day”. Normally, fan art of the protagonist Shinichi Kudo would pop up on Twitter to mark this occasion. This year also happens to be the 25th anniversary of the Detective Conan manga. With these in mind, I decided to mark this day of the year by drawing Shinichi Kudo as a pro-wrestling world champion.

The original concept I had for this was to draw Shinichi with a silver championship belt to symbolize the 25th year of the manga. Eventually, I decided that the championship belt always looked good in gold.

The design of the belt was loosely based on the Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship. The pro-wrestling episode of Detective Conan featured a promotion that looked similar to AJPW. Thus, I opted with their top championship belt for the design.

His gear is inspired by Keiji Mutoh’s gear. Ever since my Mutoh-inspired drawings of Conan and Shinichi last year, I’ve decided to keep up with the Mutoh connection.

With Detective Conan being so popular worldwide, we can safely say that it has become a “champion” in its own right. As such, I guess you can say Shinichi deserves this belt. And hey, he looks good in it.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece. Happy Kudo Day everyone.

Extra Notes

I am a pro-wrestling fan, and I am also a Detective Conan. Sometimes, I want to mix them both, and usually this comes in the form of a fan art. And since September 10 is what Detective Conan fans consider as “Kudo Day”, I decided to use this as a chance to let Shinichi Kudo (Conan’s adult form) step in the wrestling ring. And facing off against him is his “friendly competitor”, the man behind Kaito Kid — Kaito Kuroba.

For this piece, I decided to let Shinichi perform the Shining Wizard. The reasoning for this goes all the way back to 2003, when the pro-wrestling episodes of the series first aired. One of the highlights of those episodes was the featuring of Keiji Mutoh’s Shining Wizard. As such, this piece is a nod to those episodes.

For their ring gear, I opted to let Shinichi wear some Keiji Mutoh inspired gear. After all, I did get to draw Conan in Keiji Mutoh attire, so it’s a sort of continuity for my works. As for Kaito Kuroba, I chose to use some Kaito Kid inspired attire.

And why did I plaster a face of a speechless, sweatdropping Conan? Because I’m willing to bet that he, a detective geek with no combat experience, would think pro-wrestling is something he wouldn’t ever, ever do. And yet, here we are.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece. Happy Kudo Day everyone.

Extra Notes:

It’s May 4 once again, which means it’s time for the fictional birthday of my childhood/teenage hero Conan Edogawa. And like a lot of the art that I do, I want to give this year’s piece a little dash of pro-wrestling. As such, I’ve decided to draw Conan as the pro-wrestling legend Keiji Mutoh.

You may be wondering. Out of all the pro-wrestlers I could use, why did I choose Mutoh? First, it has partly to do with Keiji Mutoh’s nicknames, “Genius” and “Natural Born Master”. Conan, being the smart little detective that he is, definitely deserved to be referred to with those nicknames.

Apart from that, this is also my little response to a retweet of Keiji Mutoh’s tweet last August. Back then, Mutoh went to Hokuei town in Tottori, Japan. This particular town is also known among anime fans as “Conan Town”. After posting about it in his Twitter account, I remarked that this convinced me to draw Conan doing Mutoh’s pose. And then he retweeted it, which is really cool.

Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy this piece.

Extra Notes:

This piece was made especially for Detective Conan’s fictional birthday (May 4).

Now let’s go right away with what you’re likely thinking about now: WHY?? Of all the anime characters I could draw as a pro-wrestler, why the heck did I choose the intellectual mystery geek and non-fighter Shinichi Kudo?

Well, I’m a big fan of Detective Conan, and I credit it for having a huge influence in my life, even until now. As such, I kinda wondered what would happen if I somehow cross over Detective Conan with my other love: professional wrestling.

I mean, it’s not like this is the first time those two things crossed over:
(1) Conan once came out in a volume cover dressed as now-WWE Hall of Famer Stan Hansen.
(2) One case in the series was devoted to pro-wrestling.
(3) AJPW pro-wrestler Naoya Nomura currently uses the Detective Conan main theme as his entrance music.
(4) Popular freelance pro-wrestler Kota Ibushi once used a Detective Conan standee as a weapon in a DDT match.
(5) The Gosho Aoyama Manga Museum once became the venue for a pro-wrestling event.

So the more I learned about these, the less awkward a Detective Conan & pro-wrestling crossover seemed to me.

And besides, I’m just interested to see how well I could suddenly transform a guy like Shinichi into a pro-wrestler. I’m pretty pleased and surprised at the result.

But I imagine Conan would be speechless and confused if he ever saw this. Just like the illustration, I could imagine him saying “Oi oi….” when he sees this trading card.

“Wolf Face” Takaharu Ogami

Takaharu Ogami

【プロレスサンデー】”ウルフフェイス” 大神敬晴
PRO-WRESTLING SUNDAY: “WOLF FACE” TAKAHARU OGAMI

漫画: 名探偵コナン
Manga/Anime: Detective Conan

Extra Notes:

Let’s get something straight here. Takaharu Ogami has never been a main character in Detective Conan. He’s not even a notable supporting character in the show. He was just one of those minor characters that appeared in two episodes as one of the suspects in the murder of his fellow pro-wrestler. (SPOILER ALERT: He isn’t the killer.) Plus, his “Wolf Face” wrestling persona is pretty much a knockoff of the Tiger Mask character, in the same way that one of the other characters in those episodes was an obvious kn0ckoff of Antonio Inoki.

So this probably makes you wonder: why did I use this character?

Well, I’m a Detective Conan fan, and I’m a pro-wrestling fan. If possible, I want to cross the two over in some way, shape, or form. And since Detective Conan already has a pro-wrestler character, I figured that I use that character. Besides, until now I still feel thrilled that Gosho Aoyama actually thought about doing a Detective Conan story based on pro-wrestling.

Plus, I like the Takaharu Ogami character. A good-looking junior heavyweight wrestler that fights under a Wolf Face persona. It would be a shame if he only gets used in a couple of episodes. I wanna try and expand more on this character sometime soon. So yeah, I’m probably going to give this highly obscure character a new life in Manga Pro-Wrestling.

But you know what’s weird? I thought I was the first one to do a fan art of this character. Apparently, though, someone else beat me to it already.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece.
