ハッピーバースデー、デク! (7月15日)
Happy birthday, Deku!

I hope you will like it. I would appreciate your feedback for this drawing.

Extra Notes:

July 15 is the fictional birthday of My Hero Academia protagonist Izuku Midoriya, or more fondly known as Deku. As such, I thought it would be the perfect day to finally release a piece I first conceptualized since February: Deku Cena!

To recall, some MHA fans noted back in February how Deku looked like he was doing the “You Can’t See Me” gesture of WWE legend John Cena in the movie poster of the anime. Cena apparently noted this fan observation and turned heads amongst the MHA and the general pro-wrestling and anime community when he acknowledged this on his Instagram account. Interestingly, though, hardly anybody really took this opportunity to turn Deku into John Cena. And that’s where I step in! 😁

This isn’t the first time I drew an anime character as John Cena. Way back in 2016, I drew Attack on Titan character Jean Kirstein as John Cena, mainly because of the Jean/John connection. Back then, I was trying to capitalize on the peak of the “His Name is John Cena!” meme.

For Deku Cena, though, I opted to go for a piece that resembles a John Cena t-shirt design. As such, I used the “NEVER GIVE UP” catchphrase of Cena as the background (similar to a few of the official Cena t-shirt designs). Anyway, I think the catchphrase fits Deku perfectly since he has that “never give up” attitude anyway and pushes himself to be good in what he does.

The colors were made to resemble the colors of the U.A. High School in the series. And instead of Cena’s hand sign on his wrist bands, I opted to draw a typical hand gesture of Deku. I decided to keep the “You Can’t See Me” sign on his other wrist bands, though, simply because I can’t think of any better alternative.

I hope you enjoy this piece.

Extra Notes:

One of my plans for this year was to draw the adult version of Naruto Uzumaki as a pro-wrestler in time for his fictional birthday last October 10. Obviously, the plan got scrapped. Still, I pushed through with the piece, and now it’s time to present it before the year ends.

This isn’t the first time I’ve drawn Naruto, but I wanted this to make up for my past portrait of Naruto which, by my current standards, doesn’t measure up already.

When I originally conceived this piece, I wanted Naruto to be standing in his corner in the pro-wrestling while streamers fall under him, as a sort of recognition for the character’s legendary status in anime & manga. Eventually, I gave the streamers to Goro Shigeno instead for a different concept, but I thought it’d still be nice to draw Naruto in that corner, with a confident look before he begins his match akin to that of an experienced ring veteran.

I opted to include his new title “The Seventh Hokage” because that’s what the character is known for these days. In a way, this is also where I’m basing that vibe of him being an experienced veteran. After all, he wouldn’t be Hokage if he didn’t know what he’s doing. Also, I think it’d sound good if the ring announcer would introduce him as that.

I hope you enjoyed this piece.

Naomichi Marufuji vs Momotaroh

NAOMICHI MARUFUJI (PRO-WRESTLING NOAH) VS MOMOTAROH (THE MOMOTAROH)

Extra Notes:

Let’s start with what originally inspired me to do this. I wanted to re-draw my drawing of Momotaroh from the manga series “THE MOMOTAROH”. It’s been years since I did the drawing, so I thought it’d be nice to draw it again. But I wanted to give it a twist.

Then I remembered a pro-wrestling event back in 2017 dedicated to THE MOMOTAROH. Pro-Wrestling NOAH wrestler Naomichi Marufuji wrestled in that event as Momotaroh, giving life to the manga character. Thus, I decided to make a NOAH-style match card involving a crossover between Marufuji and Momotaroh.

The interesting thing about this is that Naomichi Marufuji recently started a faction in NOAH called the M’s Alliance. Members of this faction have to be pro-wrestlers whose names begin with the letter M. Since the fictional Momotaroh fits that description, it seemed like a good crossover to illustrate. This M connection idea was supposed to be a surprise, but Marufuji realized it by himself days ago.

Nevertheless, I hope you guys enjoy the drawings I have for you today.

Extra Notes

Deku from My Hero Academia is becoming this generation’s top shonen hero. I’ve heard about how good MHA is, and how good Deku is. So I decided to go ahead and give another shot at drawing Deku in a wrestling match.

For this piece, I decided to put him up against Kacchan (Bakugo) once more. This time, Deku is locking Kacchan up with a classic submission move: the Figure 4 leglock.

I’ve always wanted to try the move out in a drawing. And since there’s this meme of Deku “discovering” that he has legs, I thought it’d be a good way for Deku to use his newfound legs. I also thought little taunting would be nice, so I also made a “subtitled” version of this piece.

This piece was originally intended for Deku’s birthday on July 15. Still, it’s never too late to release a wrestling illustration.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece.

Extra Notes:
Luipunker91 of Deviantart recently began commissioning 09tuf for some pieces for a planned Naruto vs Kiba wrestling illustration series. Among the pieces he commissioned was a revival of 09tuf’s 2013 illustration of the full nelson between Naruto and Kiba. The difference was that back then, the characters were in their teenage stage, whereas now the characters are adults. Since the series isn’t released yet, and since I was the one who colored the original line art back then, I figured it’d be great to color this new piece as well.

For those who are not aware, the Kiba in this piece is actually a more original version of the adult Kiba. Credits go to Luipunker for conceptualizing the piece.

To really emphasize the comparison, I also decided to use the original background I used for my previous colored version.

I hope you enjoy this piece, which is pretty much a teaser of what’s to come in Luipunker’s commissioned pieces.

Extra Notes:

Last year, I decided to draw Tadaomi Karasuma as a pro-wrestler. With his strength and fierce look, he looked like someone who could fit in with the strong style of Japanese pro-wrestling. This year, on his fictional birthday (August 15), I decided to let him wrestle in what some could consider a “teacher vs. student” match.

I chose Ryoma Terasaka as his opponent. Although Ryoma is younger, he seems to have a lot of strength for his age. Plus, his height and weight stats are quite similar to Karasuma, which would make a good fit for Karasuma to wrestle with. Of course, Karasuma has the fighting experience, which would mean Ryoma would end up being a jobber boy in this case.

As for the hold, I chose the Nagata Lock III. It’s a move that I’ve always wanted to use in a drawing. It’s not common, but it sure looks like a pretty effective move. There’s even this one iconic picture where its innovator, Yuji Nagata, applied the move to a bloodied Kensuke Sasaki. That shows this move ain’t a joke at all.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece.

Extra Notes

Last year, I offered to make a fan art for an online friend. It was my way of cheering him up and wishing him the best as he started medical school. As such, he chose Mirio Togata. And since today is Mirio’s fictional birthday (July 15), I decided to catch up and release this old piece.

Admittedly, I don’t know My Hero Academia that much to know how significant Mirio is. But from what I gathered from reading various websites, he seems to be a very strong character and a good friend to Deku, though nothing is clearly set in stone at the time of writing.

For this piece, I opted to put Mirio in an NXT-like environment. The way I see it NXT is to being a WWE superstar as UA High School is to being a hero in the MHA world.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece.

Extra Notes

It’s definitely the era of My Hero Academia. It’s becoming popular in the comic world, in television, and even in social media. And quite surprisingly, it’s even becoming the manga of choice for those drawing manga-style wrestling art. As such, I’ve decided to jump in on the My Hero Academia bandwagon.

This piece started out as a sketch intended for the Goro vs. Toshi illustration series. I opted not to include the move in the series, but I still kept the rough sketch for future use. Eventually, I decided to change the characters from Goro and Toshi to Deku and Bakugo.

As for the Kimura Lock, I found the move quite interesting after seeing NJPW pro-wrestler KUSHIDA apply it as one of his finishing holds. The sketch was made a couple of years ago, so I’m guessing this was back when KUSHIDA was being promoted as the top ace of the Junior Heavyweight division of NJPW.

Besides, KUSHIDA was a babyface champion. It parallels quite nicely with the sweet but strong babyface hero Deku.

I hope you enjoy this piece.

Extra Notes:

I’ve always liked the idea of turning Kiba Inuzuka as a pro-wrestler. And apparently, some other people do as well. As a result, we’ve have a good number of fan art in the past few years featuring Kiba in pro-wrestling gear.

One of those artworks is the one made by 09tuf, as commissioned by DeviantArt member Luipunker. The original piece was good, and I liked how the costume design in that piece looked better than how I drew Kiba back in 2015.

Not too long ago, Luipunker said that I could recolor the piece if I wanted to. And so I did. Compared to past drawings, this design had more red colors in it, which seems to fit well with Kiba.

At some point, I may let Kiba wrestle further with this gear on. For now, I hope you enjoyed this piece.

Tadaomi Karasuma

【少年ジャンププロレス】烏間惟臣
SHONEN JUMP PRO-WRESTLING: TADAOMI KARASUMA

漫画: 暗殺教室
Manga/Anime: Assassination Classroom

==========

Extra Notes:

Tadaomi Karasuma, or Karasuma-sensei as he is often called, is a legitimately tough guy in the Assassination Classroom series. And when he revealed his fighter body beneath the formal suit that he normally wore, I told myself that I’d draw him as a wrestler one day. Gladly enough, I get to do this just in time for his birthday.

Since Karasuma is very skilled at fighting, I decided to model his look after a wrestler who’s really known for being a no-nonsense brawler. As such, I used NJPW’s Katsuyori Shibata as a reference for this piece. Shibata doesn’t even need a lot of gimmicks in his outfit; he just comes in the ring with simple black trunks and beats the crap out of those in his way. I imagine Karasuma to be the same guy.

Now I’m not a big fan of Assassination Classroom, so I don’t really have too many ideas on who Karasuma should wrestle against.  The one opponent that comes into my mind, though, is Ryoma Terasaka, the strong, muscular student in the series. I think it’d make for an interesting Teacher vs. Student match, with Karasuma being the stern adult and Ryoma being the cocky young kid.

And here’s a side note: When I began making the piece, Shibata had been out of the ring action due to a serious life-threatening injury. So I was definitely surprised when a day before this piece was done, Shibata was back again. This is what makes this piece stand out in my memory.

Anyway, I hope you’ll enjoy this piece.
