Extra Notes:

Today’s illustration is a drawing mainly inspired by a previous doodle created by Fairy Tail manga artist Hiro Mashima.

On October 16, 2012, Mashima posted an illustration on Twitter featuring Natsu Dragneel applying the Palo Special hold on Gray Fullbuster. At the time, I was already amazed with the various manga-styled pro-wrestling art that I see in the Internet, so it was very surprising to see the mangaka himself draw his characters in a wrestling illustration.

I eventually noted that I wanted to redraw the piece in the future, thinking that I would be able to do it soon. As the years passed, I forgot about the plan. A few weeks ago, though, someone tweeted about the drawing again, and now I decided to finally fulfill the plan.

This piece was sketched with a Mitsubishi red/blue pencil. I think the reason why I wasn’t able to do the illustration earlier was because I was using a typical drawing pencil, which made it difficult to imagine how the lines go. The red/blue pencil really helped me out in imagining how the move is supposed to look like.

For the background, I opted to use an NJPW-inspired background. At this point, it’s probably the most recognizable promotion in Japan, so I might as well just get inspiration there.

Personally, I haven’t really seen Fairy Tail, but Natsu and Gray do seem to have qualities that make them fit in an alternate pro-wrestling universe. I’m glad I was able to help bring life to that.

I hope you enjoy this piece.

Extra Notes:

One artist that I’ve followed for the past few years is Jon David Guerra. He is known for drawing pro-wrestlers in a very unique cartoonish style, and he even used to do a weekly illustration series that he called “Monday Night Draw”. Aside from that, he has also created Nightmare Pro-Wrestling, a webcomic featuring monsters competing in a fictional pro-wrestling promotion.

One of the characters in the webcomic is Maldito, who is described as being “hell bent on being the best professional wrestler in the world” with his various submission holds. Last May, a comic featuring his match versus Handsome Horace was released in the Nightmare Pro-Wrestling website. I liked the Maldito character, and I liked how the match was illustrated. As such, I decided to try drawing him.

According to his canon statistics, Maldito stands at 6′ 3 ” (around 190 cm) and weighs 272 lbs (around 123 kg). It was surprising because it looked as if he was one of the smaller guys in the comic. But then again, it is a pro-wrestling universe involving monsters as wrestlers, so you can’t argue with that.

In drawing this piece, I tried to use a reference pic featuring a pro-wrestler whose vital statistics were similar to Maldito’s. As it turned out, it matched the vital stats of NXT pro-wrestler Dominik Dijakovic.

I’m glad this piece also allowed me to experiment a bit more with body proportion. This piece also gave me the chance to try editing the lines on my smartphone, which is not what I normally do in the past. (I blame it on my mouse not working for me, though.)

I hope you enjoy this piece.

Beat the Virus! Beat COVID-19!

BEAT THE VIRUS! BEAT COVID-19!

Manga Pro-Wrestling is one with the world in the global fight against the COVID-19 virus.

Let us do our part to combat this disease, such as proper handwashing, social (physical) distancing, staying at home as much as possible, and proper hygiene.

Let’s give our support to the frontliners, from the medical staff, to the military, to the general service personnel, who are spending long hours to help us cope with the virus.

Let’s give our support to each other, as our lives are greatly affected by the virus.

And lastly, let’s keep an eye on the developments regarding the disease. Though it is good to maintain positive vibes by avoiding the news, we should pay close attention on what our governments are doing during this crisis. Support the government, but be on guard for any miracles.

I wish you all the best. Stay safe, be informed, and keep an eye on what’s happening.

DONATIONS

If you can spare some money, I strongly encourage you to donate to reliable organizations to help combat this disease.

One organization in the Philippines is the Kaya Natin! Movement. Together with the Office of the Vice President of the Philippines, they are raising funds for personal protective equipment (PPE) and care/food packs for health workers and frontliners fighting COVID-19.

Shinichi Kudo – World Champion

【名探偵プロレス】 工藤新一 – 世界チャンピオン
DETECTIVE PRO-WRESTLING: SHINICHI KUDO – WORLD CHAMPION

漫画: 名探偵コナン
Manga/Anime: Detective Conan

———-

Extra Notes

Once again, it’s September 10, the day Detective Conan fans consider as “Kudo Day”. Normally, fan art of the protagonist Shinichi Kudo would pop up on Twitter to mark this occasion. This year also happens to be the 25th anniversary of the Detective Conan manga. With these in mind, I decided to mark this day of the year by drawing Shinichi Kudo as a pro-wrestling world champion.

The original concept I had for this was to draw Shinichi with a silver championship belt to symbolize the 25th year of the manga. Eventually, I decided that the championship belt always looked good in gold.

The design of the belt was loosely based on the Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship. The pro-wrestling episode of Detective Conan featured a promotion that looked similar to AJPW. Thus, I opted with their top championship belt for the design.

His gear is inspired by Keiji Mutoh’s gear. Ever since my Mutoh-inspired drawings of Conan and Shinichi last year, I’ve decided to keep up with the Mutoh connection.

With Detective Conan being so popular worldwide, we can safely say that it has become a “champion” in its own right. As such, I guess you can say Shinichi deserves this belt. And hey, he looks good in it.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece. Happy Kudo Day everyone.

Thai Beast

ไทยบีสต์

THAI BEAST

I hope you will like it. I would appreciate your feedback for this drawing.

———-

Extra Notes:

Thai Beast is not a pro-wrestler by profession, but he wrestles with other guys in his native country as a hobby. However, with his his muscular built and his innocent face (at least, that’s what others say), he does have the built to make you believe he is one. As such, I decided to go ahead and draw the young beast from Thailand.

The gear I drew here is based on one of his profile pictures, and I think it suits him really well. Other wrestling enthusiasts have tried using similar gear, but it’s with Thai Beast that the gear brought out the wrestler in him.

The background for this piece is a wrestling room that seems to be popular among Thai wrestling hobbyists. Since he is not technically a professional wrestler, this would be the perfect place for him to show his dominance.

I’m not exactly sure how his face actually looks like, so I just went and tried other ways to draw it. Thankfully, I was able to bring out the effect I wanted: a muscled built complemented with an innocent face.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece.

Shinichi Kudo vs. Kaito Kuroba (Shining Wizard)

DETECTIVE PRO-WRESTLING: SHINICHI KUDO VS. KAITO KUROBA (SHINING WIZARD)

漫画: 名探偵コナン
Manga/Anime: Detective Conan

———-

Extra Notes

I am a pro-wrestling fan, and I am also a Detective Conan. Sometimes, I want to mix them both, and usually this comes in the form of a fan art. And since September 10 is what Detective Conan fans consider as “Kudo Day”, I decided to use this as a chance to let Shinichi Kudo (Conan’s adult form) step in the wrestling ring. And facing off against him is his “friendly competitor”, the man behind Kaito Kid — Kaito Kuroba.

For this piece, I decided to let Shinichi perform the Shining Wizard. The reasoning for this goes all the way back to 2003, when the pro-wrestling episodes of the series first aired. One of the highlights of those episodes was the featuring of Keiji Mutoh’s Shining Wizard. As such, this piece is a nod to those episodes.

For their ring gear, I opted to let Shinichi wear some Keiji Mutoh inspired gear. After all, I did get to draw Conan in Keiji Mutoh attire, so it’s a sort of continuity for my works. As for Kaito Kuroba, I chose to use some Kaito Kid inspired attire.

And why did I plaster a face of a speechless, sweatdropping Conan? Because I’m willing to bet that he, a detective geek with no combat experience, would think pro-wrestling is something he wouldn’t ever, ever do. And yet, here we are.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece. Happy Kudo Day everyone.

Manga/Anime: Pokemon

———-

Extra Notes

I’m not a Pokemon fan, but some people I know are fans. And one dream match I keep hearing about is Royal Mask vs. Crasher Wake. Although there have been some art made to show this, there hasn’t been any art showing them wrestling each other. So in celebration of the 3rd year of the Manga Pro-Wrestling website, I went on and made this match.

For this piece, I decided to let Masked Royal be the dominant one in the match. Most of the wrestling art I’ve seen made Masked Royal the jobber, so you could say I gave him a chance to be victorious. Anyway, Crasher Wake did have a chance to be dominant in a different drawing.

For the move, I opted for the Gargano Escape. I thought it was a pretty cool variation of the crossface, so I’ve really wanted to draw this move for a long time already. As a ground submission move, it was also perfect for Masked Royal to use it against his larger opponent. And with Johnny Gargano being a rising star in WWE NXT, it seemed like the right time to feature his signature move.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece.

World Wrestling Day 2018

WORLD WRESTLING DAY 2018
世界レスリングの日2018

On May 23, 1904, the first World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship was held in Vienna, Austria. More than a century later, May 23 is now celebrated by many wrestlers around the world as World Wrestling Day.

This is the fifth year in which this event is being celebrated. Unlike last year, though, I wasn’t able to make a brand-new drawing for this event. However, I decided to simply recolor the piece that I had done last year.

Admittedly, this makes the picture look a little bit more like a Valentines card. On the other hand, I guess this would be a love letter of sorts for lovers of wrestling.

I hope you enjoy this piece. And Happy World Wrestling Day everyone.
