ATTACK ON PRO-WRESTLING: JEAN KIRSTEIN (TIME SKIP VERSION)

漫画: 進撃の巨人
Manga/Anime: Attack on Titan

Extra Notes:

Attack on Titan has played a key role in the development of my pro-wrestling art. Without that Eren vs. Jean pro-wrestling art that I released way back in 2014, I wouldn’t have had the motivation to produce Manga Pro-Wrestling. And since Attack on Titan is going to release its final season this year, I thought it’s about time I give a final nod to the series that helped inspire me to draw pro-wrestling art. For today, I’m presenting a piece I’ve been wanting to release for a long time already: the new Jean Kirstein.

As some AOT viewers may know, Jean has had a huge makeover ever since the time skip in the series. I thought his new look was reminiscent of how many famous wrestlers develop from being clean-cut rookies to long-haired veterans in the ring. That’s why I wanted to portray Jean here in a manner similar to that.

For his attire, I opted to just base it on his new attire in the series. After all, doing so with his previous gear did leave a mark for some people.

I also chose to add a younger version of him in this piece to remind people of how he used to look him, especially since this was the version I drew of him in the past few years.

I hope to do a few more nods to the series before it finally ends. I hope you enjoy this piece.

Extra Notes:

It’s been 5 years since I officially began the Manga Pro-Wrestling website. A lot has happened in those five years, and I definitely didn’t imagine how much the general concept of the site has evolved through the years. To commemorate the site’s 5th anniversary, I decided to re-draw the first drawing I ever did for Manga Pro-Wrestling.

The first drawing I ever did for this site was Eren Yeager locking Jean Kirstein in Daniel Bryan’s Lebell Lock (also known back then as the Yes Lock). Technically, it was made back in 2014, before I even set up this site. But I regard this drawing as the one that really got this whole site started.

Seeing the 2014 version from the 2020 version makes you look back on how things were so different for me back then. I wasn’t too familiar with my current go-to graphics programs at the time, so it took a while for me to edit it and make it look clean and presentable. Also, the original piece was dependent on a laptop for editing, while the new one has allowed me to make more use of my smartphone.

Apart from the glaring difference in my drawing skills, this piece was somewhat a product of its time. For starters,  it encapsulated the massive popularity of Daniel Bryan in the WWE at the time, which was cemented by him winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania 30 a few months later.

This piece also signified the massive popularity of the Attack on Titan series at the time, which would later go on to expand various other platforms. Back then, Eren vs. Jean was a rivalry that dominated various fan groups, so it was a good chance for me to build a fictional wrestling rivalry out of it. Also, I never would’ve guessed how much Eren and Jean would change their appearance years later. Since it’s a redraw, I opted to use their previous looks instead.

I hope you enjoy this piece. Thank you for your support to Manga Pro-Wrestling, and I hope to make more wrestling illustrations for you to enjoy.

Extra Notes:

Today is April 7, 2019. It’s once again the fictional birthday of Attack on Titan character Jean Kirstein. But aside from that, it’s also the day of this year’s granddaddy of all wrestling shows, Wrestlemania. And with this beautiful coincidence taking place for the first time since I began drawing Jean, I figured it would be a great time to bring back Jean in the wrestling ring.

For this piece, I decided to let him take on his pal Marco Bott. This is actually a little callback to a piece I made in 2015 wherein Marco beat Jean by submission. I’ve been thinking about letting Jean get back at Marco, and I thought today was a perfect time to finally let it happen. My move of choice, the Dragon Sleeper, was another callback to a previous drawing I made of the move; I wanted to try drawing the move again, and I’m pretty satisfied with the results.

The arena is heavily inspired by the Wrestlemania arena, or at least the ones that have appeared in the last few years. As of this posting, I’m not totally sure how it would look like this year, but it’d be great if it still looked the same.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece. Happy birthday, Jean! And happy Wrestlemania everyone!

Extra Notes:

It’s Christmas time, and the year 2017 is about to end. As such, I wanted to make sure I could make an art piece that could serve as my gift for you guys, as well as one that would serve as a year-ender for 2018. I had a lot of ideas, but ultimately I chose to bring back Eren vs. Jean.

For this piece, I decided to redraw the abdominal stretch drawing that I made for Eren vs. Jean drawings way back in 2014. This was actually one of the earliest drawings I’ve ever made for Eren vs. Jean.

For a long time, I’ve always wanted to do the piece again because I felt that it needed a lot of improvement. The Cobra Twist (Abdominal Stretch) was also one of my favorite wrestling moves, so I wanted to make sure that I could draw it properly.

Also, there were some people who wanted to see Eren vs. Jean back again, so this serves as a way of testing the waters for a possible rematch between the two characters.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece. Merry Christmas and a happy 2018 to everyone!

P.S. So you really wanna see Eren vs. Jean again?

Extra Notes:

When AJ Styles wrestled for NJPW a few years ago, I had a hunch that his Styles Clash would get over among pro-wrestling fans. That was the key reason why I chose to use it in my 2014 illustration series Manga Pro-Wrestling: Eren vs. Jean 2. True enough, it did become very popular, so the piece did get a lot of hits.

However, it looks as if a lot of people only noticed the black-and-white version that I posted individually in Pixiv and DeviantArt. I’m not too sure if they realized that they could have seen the colored version in Eren vs. Jean 2. That’s why I decided to redo this piece a bit.

This time, I changed the colors to give it a WWE SmackDown Live atmosphere since AJ Styles is now in the WWE. That, by the way, still bewilders me since I’ve never thought AJ would go to the WWE.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece.

P.S. Anybody wanna see Eren vs. Jean again?

Extra Notes

It’s Golden Week already in Japan. And as I promised myself, I would release a special fan art to commemorate this yearly holiday season, especially since I failed to do so last year. There were a lot of plans, but ultimately, only one fan art could materialize. And that fanart is JEAN CENA!!! 😀

Over the past years, I’ve been noticing the various comments calling my pro-wrestler versions of Jean Kirstein as “Jean Cena”. It’s a fun play of words, and I really liked that idea. As time passed by, I began to notice that this was also being referenced in Tumblr and some other sites as well. And yet, for some reason, no one really did a fan art of this idea yet. And so I drew JEAN CENA!!! 😀

This piece is probably going to be extremely odd to look at for a lot of people. I’m expecting a lot of “WTF?!” from this piece. But what the heck, it’s JEAN CENA!!! 😀

Okay, so I’m really having fun with using the Unexpected John Cena meme expression here. So I hope you enjoy this piece. And always remember: JEAN CENA!! 😀

Extra Notes:

Months ago, I ordered a commission from 09tuf for a lineart drawing of Eren Yeager and Jean Kirstein. After doing the Eren vs. Jean series, I was interested to see how other artists would interpret the Eren vs. Jean feud, or at least the pro-wrestler versions of the two characters. And now that Jean’s birthday today, I decided that it’s now the right time to release this piece.

Since I already paired Jean Kirstein up with Masahiro Chono in a different piece back in 2014, I decided to continue the trend here by giving him Chono’s “Black Leader” gimmick. As far as the “leader” aspect is concerned, we’ve seen that Jean’s already emerging as one of the young leaders in the series. As far as the “black” aspect is concerned, though, — well, he does casually wear a black vest. 😀

Actually, I just enjoy pairing Jean with Chono’s gimmick. He comes across to me as a character with a heelish or bad guy aura when you see him, though not necessarily bad in character. Plus, I like seeing Jean do the Chono pose of proudly pointing himself with his two thumbs. I could even imagine him saying “I — AM — JEAN!!!”, in the way Chono does it. If Eren was the dangerous Mutoh, Jean was the badass Chono. It was a perfect dynamic, at least for me.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece.

(P.S. I had another piece planned for Jean’s birthday, but I’ll probably reserve it for Golden Week instead. Watch out for it.)

Extra Notes:

It’s a New Year for wrestling action here in Manga Pro-Wrestling. To kick things off for the year 2016, let’s start with my handpicked “ace” for Manga Pro-Wrestling: Jean Kirstein.

I’ve always enjoyed drawing Jean as a pro-wrestler, especially when it involves a match between him and his canon rival Eren Yeager. And ever since I’ve attached him with the Rainmaker gimmick of Kazuchika Okada, I’ve grown fond of the characterization that I’ve given to him.

But the real reason why I drew this has more to do with Wrestle Kingdom 10. I, like many other fans, always thought that Kazuchika Okada would win his match with Hiroshi Tanahashi and solidify his status as the “Ace of the New Era”. Because of that, I decided to make this artwork to go commemorate that occasion.

Over time, though, I realized that if I’m going to commemorate that occasion, then I should be drawing Okada himself. That’d probably happen in the future. But since I’ve had a Jean drawing made already, I figured that I’d just carry on with it, especially since the sketch looked damn good already. The fact that Okada is the IWGP Heavyweight Champion and Jean is still the champion in the Attack on Pro-Wrestling universe is a huge bonus for me in creating this piece.

Admittedly, I did have some issues with Jean’s pro-wrestling gear here. Okada’s gear is kinda hard to actually illustrate, so I had to take some liberties here.

Anyway, I hope you’ll enjoy this piece.

Extra Notes:

Not too long ago, I saw a photo of NOAH pro-wrestler Atsushi Kotoge on Twitter. The first thing that struck me then was simple: “Wow! He has an awesome hair!” And the more I looked at it, I came to the sudden thought, “He kinda looks like Jean Kirstein.”

Even though I’ve assigned Jean with the Rainmaker gimmick of NJPW’s Kazuchika Okada, they are very different in terms of height and weight. Kotoge is a junior heavyweight wrestler, so his vital stats are much closer to Jean. And so I thought: “Atsushi Kotoge = Jean Kirstein!”. A fan art idea was born.

While I was conceptualizing it, Kotoge reunited with his former tag partner Daisuke Harada to reform the Momo No Seishun Tag team. As I looked at Harada (and his hairstyle), I had another thought: “Hey! Daisuke Harada = Marco Bott!” The fan art idea was now changed.

This week, the team of Kotoge and Harada competed for the GHC junior heavyweight tag team championship. I told myself that if they do manage to win this match, then I’ll finally make the fan art. And they did. So, the fan art was finally made.

Extra Notes:
Another Attack on Titan birthday, another tribute. This time, we have the beloved Marco Bott (June 16). And in what could possibly be a huge deviation from many of the Jean & Marco fan art around the Internet, I’m actually drawing Marco kicking Jean’s butt in a wrestling match.

At this point, some fans may be thinking, “But Mask! Marco’s like a teddy bear. He can’t possibly beat Jean in a fight.” That I disagree. Like I said before, Marco is (or was) one of the top 10 graduates in the Survey Corps. That should be a sign that he has what it takes to be a fighter, if given the opportunity.

So why did I draw him dominating Jean, out of all the characters? Well, they were very good friends, and their vital statistics are so comparable that I think they could possibly give out an even match-up in the alternate universe.

But since I don’t know how aggressive Marco can possibly get, I thought that the best move for him to use is the single-leg Boston crab. Applying the move looks simple, but it can definitely inflict a ton of pain on one’s opponent. The move looks even more lethal when shoot-style pro-wrestlers in UWF and U-Style apply this.

With this development, Jean the champion won’t be taking this very lightly. Stay tuned for what happens next.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this piece!
